And the winner of New Music West‘s best performance prize is … Yes Nice, a group of indie-pop charmers based in Vancouver. They pocket $20,000 for their showcase last Friday at The Haven Social Club.
Their song, Horses, was also a finalist in NMW’s Song Search contest, which was won by Edmonton’s Colleen Brown for Fight! Fight! Fight! “I looked at Nathan (Wong of Yes Nice) before the judges made their final decision and said, ‘This is such a crapshoot,’” she says.
Wong and his bandmates — Scott McKellar, Jillian McKellar, Darren Frank, and Peter Hendrickson — originally hail from Edmonton. They’ll use their prize money to fund and tour their next album, which they plan to release next spring.
